designed a telescope, 1719-20; best known for his invention of the relecting quadrant (octant) in 1731, for which he received a patent in 1734 which ran until 1745; a similar instrument was independently invented, about the same time, by Thomas Godrey 1 in Philadelphia, Pa.; Hadley licensed Joseph Jackson 1 to be the sole maker; designed a bubble level in 1734. |
